            POCATALIGO COMMUNITY – James (Jim) Randolph Warren, 84, died Tuesday, February 7, 2012 after a brief illness.<br />
<br />
Born in Tignall, Wilkes County, he was the son of the late Francis Joseph “Frank” Warren Sr., and Celestia Angieline “Angie” Standard Warren.  He attended school in Tignall until high school where he rode to Elberton with a neighbor and graduated in 1944 from Elbert County High School.  He played saxophone in the Army band stationed at Seattle, Wash., and was honorably discharged when WWII ended.  He studied architecture at both Georgia Tech and Auburn University.  He lived in Atlanta where he worked for a time at Rich’s department store in downtown drawing their floor plans for displays and other renderings, and which was written up in the magazine section of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.  He and the family moved to Athens, where he designed and built several houses during the early 1960s that incorporated innovative energy saving designs and their construction techniques many years before the energy crisis made such techniques popular.<br />
<br />
He had lived in the Pocataligo Community since 1967 and owned and operated for many years, Warren Tractor Co., the oldest Deutz, and later Deutz-Allis, dealership in the U.S.  After retiring from selling farm equipment, he became active in the Broad River Watershed Association as its first newsletter editor.  He studied extensively the uses and hazards to our water supply to change current practices of water management.<br />
<br />
Mr. Warren was preceded in death by his brother, Francis Joseph “Joe” Warren, Jr., who died in 1925 and sister, Mary Will Warren (Walker) Dunson, in 2007.<br />
<br />
Survivors include his former wife, Mary Bondurant Warren, Athens and their five children, Eve Bondurant Warren (Rick) Mayes, Pocataligo, Mark Standard Warren, Athens, Amy Warren Sanders, Jefferson and Lisa Warren (Darren) Hatch, Athens and La Verkin, Utah; eight grandchildren, Sean Weeks, Athens, Angie (Maj. Brad, U.S. Army) Nicholson, Kampala, Uganda, Laura Elizabeth “Lori” (Mike) Hash, Oklahoma, David Benjamin (Fleur Alma Rystrand) Warren, South Carolina, Robert Nathaniel “Nathan” Sanders, Athens, Amanda “Mandey” Claire Sanders (SSG Brian, U.S. Army) Clark, Killeen, Texas, Mary Rachel Warren and Jennifer Leigh Warren, both of Melbourne, Fla.; and nine great-grandchildren, Haley Weeks, Athens, Aidan and Lyla Nicholson, Kampala, Uganda, Kaisea and Haelea Lucas, Demetry and Lily Hash, all of Oklahoma and Abigal and Alex Clark, Killeen, Texas.<br />
<br />
Memorial services will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a memorial gift be made in his name to the Madison County Library, P.O. Box 38, Danielsville, GA 30633-0038; or, to St. Mary’s Hospice House, 1660 Jennings Mill Road, Bogart, GA 30622<br />

            JEFFERSON – Eva Craig Hogwood, 83, died Monday, February 6, 2012.<br />
<br />
Born in Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late John Clifford “Jobo” Craig and Myrtice Wilbanks Craig.  Mrs. Hogwood was a member of Living Word Worship Center and worked at the Primp and Style Hair Salon in Jefferson for over 20 years.<br />
<br />
Survivors include her children, Debbie and Wayne Norris, Jefferson, Kathy and Ira Morgan, Danielsville, David and Tina Hogwood, Pendergrass; brother, Steve Craig, Gainesville; grandchildren, Allen and Linda Love, Marty Love, Robin Hogwood, Greg Hogwood, Justin Neese and Betsy Ledesma; 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.<br />
<br />
Funeral services were held Thursday, February 9, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home with the Revs. Wayne Norris and Dennis Kesler officiating.  The burial was in the Jackson Memorial Park with Daniel Love, Seth Love, Jeremy Love, Jamie Love, Robin Hogwood and Greg Hogwood honored as pallbearers. <br />

            COMMERCE - Henry J. Bender (Hank) passed away on February 7, 2012 at his home in the Berea Community near Commerce.  <br />
<br />
He was retired from the Navy Reserve, serving as Lt. Commander on the USS Smalley during the Korean Conflict and afterwards. After his Navy service, he worked for Aerospace Industries in Los Angeles, traveling constantly between Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Houston, Texas, and Cape Canaveral.  <br />
<br />
Bender was an expert in many fields besides his military and space involvement.  He was an expert pilot and deep sea diver.  He was a member of the Naval War College Foundation, the Civil Air Patrol, the Coast Guard Auxiliary and many other activities related to helping others in dire circumstances. He had a brilliant mind, with vast knowledge, not only in military matters, but also in the arts, including opera and music.  He and his wife had visited most of the famous museums of the world. <br />
<br />
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Dunson Bender of Commerce; a son, Todd Dunson Bender and his wife, Cyndi Lowe Bender; a grandson and his wife, Patrick and Stacey Coughlin; and a great-granddaughter, Kinley, of Alpharetta.  He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Miriam Dunson of Commerce. <br />
<br />
A memorial service will be held at the Commerce Presbyterian Church on Thursday, February 9, at 2 p.m., with a reception following in the fellowship hall.  The graveside service will be held at a later date at the Veterans' Cemetery at Canton, Ga.  <br />
<br />
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be sent to:  The USS Smalley Educational Endowment Fund, Auburn University, Auburn, Ala., 36849.<br />

A native of Alabama, she was the daughter of the late Jesse and Kathleen Dickens Gilchrist.  She was a telephone operator for Southern Bell and attended Colbert United Methodist Church.  Mrs. Morris was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford L. Morris.<br />

Survivors include sons, Mike (Debbie) Morris and Randy Morris; grandchildren, Matt Morris, Catherine Dinsmore, Allison Waddy, John Morris, Ben Morris, and Andrew Morris; and great-grandchild, Charlotte Dinsmore.<br />

            WINDER – Elmer Joe Hardegree, 89, died Sunday, February 5, 2012 at his residence.<br />
<br />
A native of Barrow County, he was the son of the late James Ernest (Dock) and Mary Elder Hardegree.  He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served as a military policeman during World War II.  He also worked as a court crier/bailiff for three U.S. District Court Judges – Judge Robert Russell, Judge Neil Andrews and Judge Boyd Sloan, followed by employment as a Deputy U.S. Marshal.  Mr. Hardegree retired from the Federal Government in 1969 after an appointment by the court and President Lyndon Johnson as United States Marshal of the Northern District of Georgia.<br />
<br />
He enjoyed his retirement years on his farm in Barrow County, raising poultry and cattle.  He also enjoyed researching his many ancestors through census records, visitation of cemeteries and courthouses and travel to other states for personal interviews.  Mr. Hardegree willingly shared his knowledge of genealogy with other researchers and contributed information to publishers of several family histories includig The Harris Family, The Segars Family, The Elder Family, The Wages Family and the Hardegree/Hardigree Family.  Mr. and Mrs. Hardegree helped to survey over thirty cemeteries in Barrow County for inclusion in Barrow County Georgia Cemeteries’ book published in 2000.  He was a member of Cattlemen’s Association, Barrow County Historical Society, East Georgia Genealogical Society and Chapel Christian Church.<br />

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Lema Wages Hardegree; children and spouses, Sue and John Sheats, Barbara and Jim Harwell, James and Sherry Hardegree, all of Winder and Debbie and Steve Johnson, Arnoldsville; eight grandchildren, Reed (Holly Sheats, Rory Sheats, Griffin Sheats, all of Winder, Audrey (Chuck) Neuschafer, Cimarron, Kan., Nathan (Tricia) Harwell, Cumming, Jennifer Hardegree, Beth (Phillip) Bell, all of Winder and Eli Johnson, Arnoldsville; two brothers, Donald (Doris) Hardigree and Jimmy Hardegree; and nine great-grandchildren, Luke and Tate Sheats; Drew, Katie and Sydney Harwell; Emma Neuschafer; Savanah Hardegree; Avery and J.P. Bell and three step-great-grandchildren, Alex, Kaleb and Blake Neuschafer.  Mr. Hardegree was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Hardegree Mobley and a great-granddaughter, Sela Mae Sheats.<br />

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 8, at Chapel Christian Church, Winder, with the Rev. Jim Stephens conducting the service.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, February 7, at the funeral home.<br />

Born in Fulton County, he was the son of the late John Bevel and Minnie Parson Barrett.  He was a member of First Pentecostal Church and was retired from Martin Mechanical.<br />
<br />
Survivors include sons, John Barrett, Royston, William Barrett, Jacksonville, Fla., and Keith Barrett, Royston; a sister, Paula Dyer, Lula; grandchildren, Cameron, McKayla, Lauren, Lea, Laila and Lane Barrett; four nieces; and four nephews.<br />

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m., Monday, February 6, at the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home with the Revs. Steve Cole and Larry Dyer officiating.             DEMOREST - William Douglas "Doug" Barnett, 88, passed away on Friday, February 3, 2012, following a sudden illness.<br />
<br />
He was born in Jefferson, on April 30, 1923, the son of the late Herman Elmer and Ellie Amanda Eckles Barnett. Mr. Barnett was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Theresa Hendrickson Barnett. He was a United States Army Air Force veteran, having served in the 329th Airdrome Squadron, 3rd Combat Cargo during WWII. He was a member of the famed "Flying Tigers." Mr. Barnett was a teacher and coach for several years at Demorest High School before beginning his career in personal finance. He was a co-owner of Citizens Finance in Cornelia and later served as a Correctional Officer at Lee Arrendale State Prison. Mr. Barnett was very active in his community in which he had served as a board member for the Demorest Elementary School, was Past-President of the Cornelia Chamber of Commerce, the Cornelia Kiwanis Club, and the South Habersham High School Touchdown Club. He was a member of the Bethany Methodist Church in Jefferson, and attended the Demorest Baptist Church. Mr. Barnett was a member of the Cornelia Lodge # 92 F &amp; A.M. and had just received his 60 year apron.<br />
<br />
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Marcus Tench, Demorest; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Betty Barnett, Moore County, N.C.; brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Cindy Barnett, Lynn, N.C.; brother-in-law and wife, Charles and Ann Hendrickson, Gainesville; grandchildren, Jenny Jones, Mark Barnett, Sandy Wright, Allison Tench Becker, Austin Tench; eight great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.<br />
<br />
Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 06, from the Whitfield Funeral Home North Chapel - Demorest, with Tom Mewborn officiating. Interment will follow in the Yonah Memorial Gardens with full military honors provided by the Grant Reeves V.F.W. Post # 7720, the American Legion Post # 84, the Rabun County D.A.V. Chapter # 15, and the Georgia National Guard. Masonic graveside rites will be provided by the Cornelia Lodge # 92 F &amp; A.M.<br />
<br />
The family will receive friends at the North Chapel from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday.<br />

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, R.C. Smith, Jr.; sons, Charles and Earl Smith; brothers, Joe and Edd Trammell; and granddaughter, Sandra Corpus.<br />

            BOGART – Marvine Rider, 65, died Friday, February 3, 2012.<br />

Born in Dahlonega, she was the daughter of the late Guy and Reba Bryant Rider. She was a member of Beech Haven Baptist Church in Athens. She was a honors graduate of Lumpkin County High School in 1964, attended North Georgia College, transferred to the University of Georgia, completed her bachelor of arts and master of arts degrees in 1968 and 1970. She taught high school in Buford from 1970 to 1973, and then moved to Bowling Green, Ky. and completed a master of science in education. She served as the coordinator of orientation for new students at Western Kentucky University from 1975 to 1978. She then moved to the metropolitan D.C. area and was employed for two years at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, then for 23 years at the Library of Congress. She retired in March, 2005.<br />
<br />
Survivors include sisters, Arlean Barrett, Dahlonega, and Verba Jean Gilreath, Athens; brother, Larry Rider, Winder; niece, Joan Barrett Greenwalt, Jacksonville, Fla.; and nephews, Stephen, Sean and C.J. Rider, all of Winder.<br />
<br />
Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 5, at 2 p.m. from Smith Funeral Home with the Revs. A.B. Sawyer and Johnny Wright officiating. Burial will be in Barrow Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday, February 4, from 5 to 9 p.m.<br />

Born in Danielsville, she was the daughter of the late Homer and Pearl Long Freeman and was preceded in death by her husband, Allison Morris and grandson, Dennis McCarty. She was retired from Blue Bell Manufacturing and was a longtime member of Colbert First Baptist Church and Saints Alive Senior Group. <br />
<br />
Mrs. Morris will always be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and friend, as well as her love for her church and the Fidelis Sunday School Class.  <br />
<br />
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Alton McCarty; and grandson, Chris McCarty.  <br />
Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 5, at 2 p.m. at Colbert First Baptist Church with the Rev. Brad Wilson officiating.  Interment will follow at Colbert Cemetery.  Mrs. Morris will lie in state from 1:30 until 2:00 p.m.<br />
<br />
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 6 until 8 p.m.<br />

            COMMERCE – Donnie Mozelle Phelps Barrett, 80, died Thursday, February 2, 2012, at the Brown Memorial Convalescent Center in Royston.<br />
<br />
She was born in Oconee County on July 8, 1931, the daughter of the late Harry H. and Mary Sue Walls Phelps. She was a homemaker and member of the New Hope Worship Center in Danielsville. Mrs. Barrett was preceded in death by a grandson, Shawn Hill; and sister, Annie R. Price.<br />
<br />
Survivors include a daughter, Vickey Disharoon, Ila; son, Donald Barrett, Danielsville; sister, Mary Ellen Fowler, Royston; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.<br />
<br />
Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 5, at 2 p.m., from the chapel of Pruitt Funeral Home with the Revs. George Lovely and Dennis Kesler officiating. Burial will be in the Jones Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Danielsville. The body is at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, February 4. The family is at home.<br />

            ATHENS - Jerry Eugene Harrell, 76, died Wednesday, February 1, 2012.<br />
<br />
A native of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Mr. Harrell was the son of the late D.W. Harrell and Ruby Nell Cook Harrell and was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Daniel Harrell and sister, Elizabeth Ruth Ashcraft.  He had worked for Gulf State Paper Company in Tuscaloosa and retired from Reliance Electric in Athens.  Mr. Harrell was also a member of Alberta Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa.<br />
<br />
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Wheelis Harrell of Athens; son, Russell Lee Harrell of Anderson, S.C.; grandchildren, Justin Harrell, Ben Harrell, Parker Harrell, Chelsea Harrell, Clara Harrell, and Nick Harrell; and great-granddaughter, Abby Harrell.<br />
<br />
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 4, at Evergreen Memorial Park with Clint Adams officiating.  The family will receive friends from 12-2 p.m., prior to the service at Bernstein Funeral Home.<br />
<br />
The grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.<br />
<br />

Born in Newton County, she was the daughter of the late Arlow and Pauline Corbin Payne and was the widow of Leonard Specht.  Mrs. Specht was also preceded in death by two children, Charles Dawley and Billy James Dawley.<br />
<br />
Survivors include her children, Chris Dawley, Winder, Courtney Dawley, Stockbridge, Carl Johnson, Forsythe, Clifford Johnson, Forsythe, Cody Dawley, Commerce, Barney Dawley, Sr, Winder, David Dawley, Athens, Jeanette Garner, Winder, and Clara Greene, Athens; 19 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; five sisters; two brothers; and several nieces and nephews.<br />
<br />
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, February 4, at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Douglas Duncan officiating.  The body will lie in state at the church from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m., Thursday, February 2 and Friday, February 3.<br />

Janis was a very caring and loving Christian wife, mother, grandmother and friend.  She was a member of First Baptist Church of Snellville and was employed by Akins Ford for over 30 years.<br />

Survivors include her husband of 39 years, David Foster; children, Chris and Sarah Foster, Atlanta and Nicole and Brad Barrett, Snellville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Everett and Shirley Thornton and Donald and Lillian Thornton, all of Winder; grandchildren, Davis Foster, Addison Barrett and she was anxiously awaiting the birth of Baby Boy Barrett in June; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.<br />
<br />
Funeral services were held Sunday, January 29, in the Snellville Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home with the Rev. Alton Wilson officiating.  Burial was at Barrow Memorial Gardens, Winder.<br />

            CRAWFORD - Reece Cleveland Lester, Jr., 82, passed away on Tuesday, January 31, 2012.<br />
<br />
He was originally from Ila, but had been a resident of Oglethorpe County for many years and was a member of Living Waters Baptist Church in Arnoldsville. He was the son of Reece Lester and Leila Darnell and was preceded in death by his wife, Mattie Doster Lester and all of his siblings. <br />
<br />
He was an entrepreneur for over 40 years of a wholesale grocery business and after retiring, was employed at Wal-Mart for five years, which he commonly referred to as his "other" family. He was a member of the United States Marine Corp for eight years and served in the Korean War. He was well known in the community as a racecar driver and animal lover. His passion for those was surpassed only by his devotion to his wife and soul mate, Mattie. His love of auto racing and his horsemanship skills have been passed on to three generations, and his love for animals has been instilled in his entire family. His presence will be missed greatly throughout the community, his church, his friends at Wal-Mart and most deeply by his family.<br />
<br />
Survivors include two sons, Stan Lester, Hartwell, and Don Lester, Crawford; one daughter, Michelle Lester, Winterville; five grandchildren, Joshua Lester, Ashley Meadow, Johnathon Lester, Brandon Lester and Eddie Lester; two great-grandchildren, Blake Lester and Taylor Lester; and several nieces and nephews. <br />
<br />
Funeral services will be Friday, February 3, at 1 p.m. at the chapel of Lord and Stephens, EAST. Tim McDonald of Living Waters Baptist Church will officiate. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. Following the service, friends and family will gather to celebrate his life at one of the local Athens restaurants. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.<br />
Danielsville Florist is in charge of flowers. Donations can also be made in his name at any of the local animal shelters. <br />

She was the daughter of the late James R. and Eula Westbrook Tucker. She was retired from Sears. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Eugene Johnson Sr.<br />

Survivors include a son, Robert E. Johnson Jr., Gainesville; daughter, Cheryl Johnson Davis, Blue Ridge; sisters, Eloise Tucker, and Sybil (Carl) Simpkins, all of Commerce; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.<br />

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 3, at 11 a.m., from the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home with Carlton Allen officiating. Burial will be in the Jackson Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday morning from 10 until the funeral hour.<br />
