HULL - Betty Jean (Williams) Smith, 75, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 7, 2011.
She was the daughter of the late Roy and Helen Williams and sister of the late Benny Williams. She was a member of Moon's Grove Baptist Church and retired from Rich's after 25 years.
Those left remembering her with great love are her devoted husband of 55 years, Horace Smith; children, Tammy (Brian) Smith, Jacksonville, Fla., and Mark Smith, Chesapeake, Va.; grandchildren, David Smith, Jacksonville, Fla. and Ian, Sarah and Carter Smith, Chesapeake, Va.; and many other friends and family.

Born in Athens, he was the son of Evelyn Clark Fouche of Pocataligo and the late James Daniel Fouche, Sr. He had worked for the University of Georgia for nine years and had also worked for the Atlanta Union Mission.

DANIELSVILLE – Rosa L. Brown, 65, died.
Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by a brother, Jessie Roger Lord.

James Paul Burroughs (12-2-11)
COLBERT - James Paul Burroughs died Friday, December 2, 2011.
A lifelong resident of Madison County, he was the son of the late Marvin and Leo Cooper Burroughs. He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Roberta Burroughs; a sister, Willie Mae Threlkeld, Paoli; and a brother, Ralph Burroughs, Tucker.
He was a retired Postmaster after serving 26 years and a member of the Jackson EMC Board of Directors for 35 years. He was a member of Colbert Baptist Church where he served as deacon and teacher of the Men’s Bible Class. Mr. Burroughs was an active member of the Colbert Lions Club and the Retired Postmasters, “Hasbeens.” He served in World War II and received the Purple Heart for his service and sacrifice to his country. He loved life and will be remembered by all that knew him for his jovial personality.

HULL - Margaret Elizabeth “Beth” Strickland, 59, died Thursday, December 1, 2011.
Born in Commerce, she was the daughter of Dorothy P. Swindel of Hull and the late George Amory Swindel, Jr. She was a 1970 graduate of Madison County High School and worked for nearly 20 years at the Athens Plastic Surgery Clinic, followed by several years with Dr. Kevin Adams in Danielsville. She enjoyed reading, knitting, taking care of her cats and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors in addition to her mother include her husband, Rudy Strickland; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jason and Bronwyn Strickland, Dolores, Colo., and Seth P. and Heather Strickland, Hull; sister and brother-in-law, Ann Swindel and Jim Nuckolls; aunt, Carol Cappleman; cousins, Jimmy Jones, Leigh Foster and Patsy Jones, Hull, Jon Jones, Arkansas, Rodney Park, Iowa, and Cynthia Seagraves, Commerce.

DANIELSVILLE – Nathan Norton, 75, died Wednesday morning, November 30, 2011, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Born in Banks County, he was the son of the late Noah and Belle Savage Norton. He was a semi-retired subcontractor with Alltel, was employed part-time as a caretaker with Rossie Lake Branch Farms in Bishop, and was a veteran of the United States Navy. Mr. Norton was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Norton Jennings.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Amos Norton, Danielsville; a son, Joel Norton, Jefferson; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

ILA - Grady “Albert” Vaughn, 70, died Saturday, November 26, 2011 at Piedmont Hospital.
Born in Madison County on August 19, 1941, he was a son of the late Herbert Lee and Nellie Mae Vaughn. He served in the Postal Unit of the Army Reserves for six years. At Mercer Extension, he began a lifelong study and love of the Bible. He later attended Toccoa Falls College and was ordained as a minister on February 15, 1976. He served as pastor of Antioch Baptist Church in Stephens, Ga. and Providence Baptist Church in Pocataligo, Ga. He had a genuine love for his congregation and the surrounding community. He considered serving others as the highest honor and privilege of his life.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Billie Clarke Vaughn, Ila; daughter and son-in-law, Lorie and Jerry Skelton, Ila; granddaughters, Heather, Merry, Abigail and Lydia Skelton, Ila; brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Peggy Vaughn, Commerce; and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 30, at 3 p.m. at Providence Baptist Church with the Revs. John Griffeth, Robby Brown, Lex Bowen and Dayton Logan officiating. POCATALIGO - Eula Mae Chatham Adams, 72, passed away on Thursday, November 24, 2011.
She was the daughter of Morris and Lucille B. Chatham of Hartwell. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Bill Chatham, Jimmy Chatham, and Stewart Chatham of Hartwell; two sisters Cuemi Hart and Maryetta Chatham of Hartwell.
Mae was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She enjoyed life even through her 12-year battle with kidney failure and weekly dialysis treatments. Even though her journey has ended here on Earth, her life in Heaven has just begun. We will always cherish the memories and the time we were able to spend with her. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
