BOWERSVILLE – Lucy Foster Carroll, 90, died Tuesday, January 3, 2012, at her residence.
Born in Hart County on August 18, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Tommie Bennett Foster. She was formerly co-owner and operator of Howard Carroll Furniture Company. She was a member of the Bowersville United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Quilting Group. Mrs. Carroll was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Wayne Carroll.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and David Nichols, Commerce; son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Pam Carroll, Hartwell; grandchildren and spouses, Ashley and Santiago Tagtachian, Brent and Lindsey Nichols, Kenzie and Jason Cheek and Chris Carroll; and great-grandchildren, Mateo and Mila Tagtachian and Emmarie and Anabelle Nichols.

Survivors include her son, Kent Gordon, Conyers; sister, Mary Baker, Athens; one grandchild, two great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He also bored wells, owned a mobile home park, wrecker service, worked at Atlanta Gas Light and for John Deere. He loved restoring antiques cars, trucks and John Deere tractors.

Mrs. Fallaw was a retired executive secretary for 36 years with Fireman's Fund Insurance Company. She volunteered for Northside Hospital, and helped with the Peachtree Road Race and the Olympics. Mrs. Fallaw was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Fallaw, Sr.; and a son, Charles Fallaw, Jr.
Survivors include grandchildren, Samuel C. Fallaw, Homewood, Ala. and Elizabeth L. Fallaw, Epworth; and brother, Karl H. Cartledge, Macon.

She had retired from the Department of Family and Children Services after serving as a department caseworker and manager for many years. Mrs. Fleming was preceded in death by her first husband, Garnett Tyner, and her second husband, Vernon Fleming; and brothers, Isom Brown, Ray Brown and Fred Brown.

J. Hoyt Nelms, 88, died Saturday, December 17, 2011.
Born in the Sanford Community in Madison County on June 16, 1923, he was the son of the late Hoyt J. and Irene Williams Nelms. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn O’Quinn Nelms.
He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1944, was a farmer, and retired from the public accounting business he ran in Athens for over 50 years. He was a lifetime member of the Georgia Master 4-H Club and the Madison County Cattleman’s Association, for which he was chairman for several years in its formative period. He taught adult Sunday School at both Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where he was a lifetime member, and at the Gordon’s Chapel United Methodist Church until his health prevented his attending.
Survivors include his children and their spouses, Leonard (Brenda) Nelms, Houston, Texas, Angela Rouse and Linda Kay Holloman (George), the Sanford Community, and Judy (Gary) Cochrane of Ball Ground; 11 grandchildren, Jennifer Nelms, Tara and Trey Bourgeois, Lynsey and Derek Nelms, Beth Holloman, Adrienne Holloman (Alan) Simmons, Allison Paul (Billy) Phillips, Clinton (Brittnie) Rouse, Kimberly Cochrane (Dick) Locastro, and Kara Cochrane (Jason) McClure; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was born in Comer, Oglethorpe County, on August 4, 1911. She was predeceased by her parents, Jesse Mercer and Josie Dye Dillard; husband, Deward A. Paul; brothers, Delmer and Mercer Dillard; sisters, Gladys M. Akin and Grace D. Paul; sons, William L. Paul, Sr. and James M. Paul, Sr.; and great-grandson, Glen R. Gabriel.
Mrs. Paul was a homemaker and greatly enjoyed working with her flowers and quilting. She was a member of The Friendship Club - a quilting club, for many years.
She was the oldest member of Clouds Creek Baptist Church, which she joined as a child. She was honored in 1984 for her many years of dedication as the pianist. She also served in many other positions in the church over the years.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Oneta P. and Franklin Nation, Crawford, Jeanette P. Berryman (Joe Mack Berryman-deceased), Comer, Dare P. and E. Born in Madison County on January 22, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Hubert M. and Leta Mae Carey. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who cared for everyone with much compassion. She lived most of her life in Athens, returning to Madison County in the later years. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and was an excellent cook and expert seamstress. Mrs. Scarborough was predeceased in death by her beloved husband of 49 years, Harry Taylor Scarborough; a great-grandson, Griffin Segars; two sisters, Blanche Carey and Bernice Carey Ingram; brother-in-law, Clifford Ingram; and three brothers, Weyman Carey, Bud Carey, and Calvin Carey.

The family would like to thank Odyssey Health Care for their care and support. Also special thanks goes to her caregivers, Brenda Tarver, Kathy Reese, and Angela Wynn, who loved and cared for her with much compassion to the very end.
A time of visitation for family and friends will be held Friday evening, December 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be Saturday, December 17, at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park.
Flowers are appreciated, or memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Madison Oglethorpe Animal Shelter.
