LULA - Mary “Jurelle” Meeks Smelley, 94, died Friday, October 07, 2011 at Northridge Medical Center.
Born in Banks County on January 02, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Mel and Mae Pritchett Meeks. She was preceded in death by sisters, Irene Morris and Mildred Sims; and a granddaughter, Torrey Smelley.
Mrs. Smelley was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Lula, where she sang in the choir and was a Sunday school member. She was also a homemaker who enjoyed sewing, gardening, farm work, and going to church.
Survivors include husband, Hugh Smelley, Lula; son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Joyce Smelley, Lula; granddaughter and husband, Shanda and Justin Lott, Lula; brother and sister-in-law, Ferd and Betty Meeks, Lula.
Funeral services were held Sunday, October 9, at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Lula with the Revs. James Duncan, Phil Parks and Ralph Smith officiating. Interment was at the church cemetery.

BALDWIN - Helen Myers McDuffie, 92, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, October 3, 2011, at the Oaks at Scenic View Nursing Home following an extended illness.
She was born on September 4, 1919, in Cherokee, N.C. and was the daughter of the late Albert and Leasie Hogsed Myers. Mrs. McDuffie was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Franklin McDuffie; children, Howard McDuffie and Louise Parker; brothers, Amos Myers and Jack Myers; sisters, Margie Roberts, Nora Coley, Molly Moody, Maggie Jones, and Nellie Myers; and an infant sister, Mary Myers. Mrs. McDuffie was of the Baptist denomination, a homemaker, and enjoyed crafting. She spent many years with her sisters, “The Myers Sisters”, playing Gospel and Bluegrass Music all over the southeast winning various awards for their talents in singing and song writing.
Survivors include her daughters, Bertie Chaffin, Baldwin, and Leasie M. Whitmire, Mt. Airy; daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and J.R. Reems, Baldwin, and Patsy and Virgil Alexander, Toccoa; son and daughter-in-law, Lonnie and Lucille McDuffie, Cleveland; brother and sister-in-law, John H. She was employed with Harmony Grove Mill in Commerce for 25 years and volunteered at BJC Hospital for a number of years. She was a member of Gillsville Baptist Church for over 75 years, where she taught Sunday School for more than 50 of those years. Mrs. Hewell was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis H. Hewell; daughters and son-in-law, Betty Jo and Grover Whitlock and Barbara Sue Cape; granddaughter, Melissa Cape; grandson, Robby Hewell; and her great-granddaughter, Kyleigh Beth Hewell.

Carrenia Pritchett Bonds, 92, formerly of Baldwin, died Wednesday, September 28, 2011, at Habersham Home following an extended illness.
Born on November 26, 1918 in Banks County, she was the daughter of the late Morgan and Carrie Jordan Pritchett. Mrs. Bonds was preceded in death by four sons-in-law; six sisters; and one brother.
Mrs. Bonds lived most of her life in Banks County and was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. She was a retired seamstress with Blue Bell Manufacturing in Commerce. Her energy level was boundless and her biscuits will be sorely missed.
Survivors include a daughter, Claudette Griffin, Hiawassee; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbrann and Frank Gordon, Gillsville, Faye and Sammy Cunningham, Baldwin, Joan and L.C. Parks, Lula; brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Louise Pritchett, Smyrna; sister, Elizabeth Oakes, Lula; nine grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.

Eugene “Gene” Halski, 91, died peacefully Wednesday September 28, 2011 at his assisted living residence in Athens.
Listening to his polkas, he was surrounded by loving family and many caring staff of Silverleaf.
Born in Makew, Ukraine on December 25, 1919, he was the son of Ivan and Anastasia Huzhalsky . He immigrated to the United States in 1950 by way of Germany, where he resided after World War II ending as a displaced person at Camp Lysenko. He met and married Lisa Shabkov at the camp. Through the Lutheran Church Eugene and his family, including their three-year-old son, Walton, were sponsored to come to Georgia in September 1950. They ultimately settled in Georgia buying a small farm in Talmo. They became American citizens and built a cattle and broiler farm business. Gene was passionate about living and dancing. After working hard, he loved any opportunity to dance. He was said to be the best polka dancer in Georgia and ladies would wait in line to dance with him.
Gene is lovingly survived by four children, sons, Walton Halski (Peggy), Alto, and Toni Halski, Sanibel Island; daughters, Wanda Neislar (Ron), Athens, and Sweetlana Stewart (Dean), Kennesaw; grandchildren, Lisa Halski, Lewis Halski, Ranie Neislar Hayes, Lindsey Neislar, Glen Stewart, Alex Stewart, Ellen Stewart, and Hayley Halski; and three great-grandchildren; a longtime companion, Rosemary Woodel; and the mother of his children, Lisa Halski.

GILLSVILLE - David Lawrence Graham died Saturday, September 10, 2011, at his residence.
Born in Detroit, Mich., on February 5, 1942, he was the son of the late Art and Edith Graham. He was a United States Air Force veteran from 1960 to 1964.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Estella Graham, Gillsville; children, Johnny Graham, Randy and Heidi Clapper, Deanne Hawkins, Knett and Rodney Butler, and Jake Graham; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Janet Graham.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, September 14, at 7 p.m., from the Commerce Community Church. The body has been cremated.

HOMER - Mildred Aaron Cochran, 85, went home to be with our Lord on Friday, September 9, 2011, at her residence.
She was born in Banks County, on November 3, 1925, the daughter of the late Albert and Gladys Satterfield Aaron. She was preceded in death by her husband, Julian Addy Cochran; son, Phillip Q. Cochran; and brothers, Clyde and Boyd Aaron. She was a graduate of Banks County High School and was employed by Coats and Clarks Thread Mill for several years and Carwood Manufacturing Company. Mrs. Cochran was a food service technician and the manager, as well as a cook for Grady School Lunchroom for several years until it closed. Everyone said she and Mrs. Wansa Purcell made the best rolls around. Later in life she came home, raised chickens, had a cattle farm, and was also a poll worker for Banks County Elections for a number of years.
Mrs. Cochran was a member of Damascus Baptist Church and the Joy Sunday School class. Her hobbies were helping in church as long as she was able. She loved her church so very much. She was also a member of the Banks County AARP. Mrs. Cochran loved to cook, make quilts and crochet. After she became ill, Mrs. Lucilla Bell would call her and tell her it was time to crochet.
Thanks to the Hospice nurses who were so good to her and also thanks to Big Daddy.

TOCCOA - Dorothy Marie Forrester Grafton, 92, of 271 Racetrack Road, Toccoa, died Thursday, August 25, 2011 at her residence.
A daughter of the late Will Grant and Cora Duskey Ivie Forrester, she was born March 15, 1919 in Habersham County, having lived most of her life in Stephens County. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Habersham County and attended Calvary Baptist Church in Toccoa. She was employed with Wright’s Manufacturing for a number of years and later became a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Grafton in 1986; and a grandson, Doug English.
Survivors include two daughters, Mildred English and Brenda Ausburn and her husband, Morris, all of Toccoa; four grandchildren, Renea English Deal, Tanya Pattillo, Wendi Ausburn and Connie English; five great-grandchildren; sister, Emma Mullinix, Clarkesville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday, August 28, at the Hillcrest Chapel of the Acree-Davis Funeral Home with eulogy by Bryant Chitwood and the Rev. Jewell Gaines officiating. Serving as pallbearers were Scott Carpenter, Greg Grafton, Wayne Grafton, Dustin Grafton, Joe Brown, and Bryant Chitwood.
Burial was in the Stephens Memorial Gardens.
