CARNESVILLE – Orin Smith Lunsford Sr., 79, died Thursday, February 5, 2009, at the Cobb Memorial Hospital in Royston.
Born in Franklin County on June 10, 1929, he was the son of the late Martin and Etta Smith Lunsford. He was a retired shipping clerk, having worked for Oliver Rubber Company with 35 years of service. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, and was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. Mr. Lunsford was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Pritchett Lunsford; and a sister, Annie Bell Lunsford.
Survivors include a son, Orin Lunsford Jr., Hoschton; daughters, Elaine Sylvester, Birmingham, Ala., Diane Griffith, Carnesville, and Darnell Albritton, Tupelo, Miss.; a sister, Guynell Whitsel, Royston; special friend, Lou Lunsford, Carnesville; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

LEESBURG, FLA. – Charles Hampton Vernon, 87, died Friday, February 6, 2009.
He was born in Chattooga County, on February 19, 1921, the son of the late Charles and Ethel Vernon. He and his wife, lived in Jefferson for 35 years before moving to Florida. He was a retired cotton buyer. A proud World War II veteran, he served in the United States Navy as a Radioman First Class and Intercept Operator with the Fleet Radio Unit, a part of the Naval Security Group. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Jefferson, the American Legion, and the U.S. Naval Cryptologic Veterans Association. Mr. Vernon was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Abbot; and son, David R. Vernon.
Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Jean Beadles Vernon; daughter and son-in-law, Betsy and John Harrington of Leesburg, Fla.; daughter-in-law, Kathy Vernon Long, Prosperity, S.C.; granddaughters, Suzanne Godsey and Jessica Vernon, both of Arden, N.C., and Katie Gurley, Atlanta; grandsons, Ben Vernon, Charlotte, N.C., and Alex Gurley, Dawsonville; and a great-granddaughter, Lillian Ruth Godsey, Arden, N.C.

Mr. Dixon was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Hart Dixon; and a brother, James Dixon.

BRASELTON - J.W. “Jake” Spruill, 84, formerly of Suwanee and Dunwoody, died Thursday, February 5, 2009.
Born on July 13, 1926, in DeKalb County, he was the son of the late Bency and Ola Womack Spruill. He was a 1941 graduate of Chamblee High School and attended the University of Georgia. He played professional baseball with the Philadelphia Athletics Farm Club under Connie Mack for seven years. He owned and operated L.S. Hauling in Dunwoody for 20 years, and was a member of Berkley Hill Golf Club in Duluth for 30 years. He was a former member of the Dunwoody United Methodist Church and was a member of the Sugar Hill United Methodist Church for 25 years. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Navy during World War II. Mr. Spruill was preceded in death by a brother, Claude Spruill.
