James Howard Carter, 87, of Gainesville, died Friday, December 19, 2008, at his residence following an extended illness.
Born in Banks County, he was the son of the late Culver Cohen and Myrtle Hooper Carter. He was a member of New Holland Baptist Church and retired from Miliken in New Holland in 1986. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Army during World War II in Africa and Italy. Mr. Carter was preceded in death by his wife, Charlene Clark Carter; brothers, Billy Carter and J.B. Carter; and a son, Stanley Lamar Carter.
Survivors include a son, Jimmy Leigh Carter, Gainesville; granddaughter and husband, Nicki and Jon Koppenaal, Duluth; grandson and wife, Dustin Leigh and Haley Carter, Lula; great-grandson, Cohen Joseph Carter, Lula; brother and sister-in-law, George and Cecile Carter, Gainesville; sisters and brother-in-law, Helen Martin, Florida, Hazel and Brian Lingerfelt, Gainesville; and a number of other family and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, December 22, in the chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home with the Revs. Jon Beck, Mike Taylor and Swayne Cochran officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery.
