Marie Townsend Conner, 87, of Statham, died Friday, December 12, 2008.
A native of Athens, she was the daughter of the late George A. and Madeline Roche Townsend. She received her BS and Master’s degrees from the University of Georgia. She worked at the Garfield Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC, and also as a dietician at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Dublin before returning to the University of Georgia in the same capacity. She retired from the University of Georgia in 1974 and did many years of volunteering at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens. She was also a very active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Mrs. Conner was preceded in death by her husband, John Sidney Conner.
Survivors include a daughter, Madelyn Conner Kreiger, Statham; and grandchildren, Maddi and Conner Kreiger; brothers and sisters-in-law, George A. and Freda Townsend and William R. and Sue Townsend; brother, Eugene A. Townsend; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, December 15, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father David McGinnis officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Glenn Townsend, Jimmy Conner, Tom Gearhart, Todd Townsend, Mark Townsend and Don Conner.
