Jean Grey Womble Williams, 83, of Buford, died Friday, November 7, 2008, at the Alzheimer’s Care of Commerce.
Born on August 4, 1925, in Scranton, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John and Nellie Womble. She was a homemaker most of her life, worked as a volunteer and served as president of the Athens/Clarke County Humane Society and the Hilton Head Island Audubon Society, was an avid birder, traveling with her husband across the United States and to other countries on bird-watching tours. She was also a devoted dog lover, having raised litters of English Bulldogs and Shihtzu’s. Her dogs were always by her side. Mrs. Williams had lived in Scranton, Pa., Petersburg, Va., Martinsville, Va., Seaford, Del., Richmond, Va., Athens, Northern Ireland and Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Survivors include her children, Jack Williams, Homer, and Ann Gleason, Atlanta; grandchildren, Patrick Gleason, Annie Haney and Ellie Gleason, all of Atlanta; and a cousin, Dorothy Womble, New York City, N.Y.
Private memorial services were held in Homer.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hilton Head Island Audubon Society, the Alzheimer’s Care of Commerce, or the American Lung Association.
Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, was in charge of arrangements.
