Minnie Mae Payne, 87, of Baldwin, died Sunday, October 26, 2008, at her residence following an extended illness.
She was born in Habersham County on November 28, 1920, the daughter of the late Joe and Mae Tow York. She worked at Carwood Manufacturing with 25 years of service and Mt. Vernon Mills with 12 years of service, and was Baptist. Mrs. Payne was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Payne; step-mother, Lillie York McDonald; brothers, Joe York Jr. and J.D. York; and a sister, Dot Umberhant.
Survivors include daughters, Helen Howell, Carolyn Helton and Mary Jordan, all of Baldwin, Vivian Hicks, Mt. Airy; a son, Dwane Heaton, Baldwin; brothers, Lawrence York, Mt. Airy, and Lloyd York, Toccoa; sisters, Frances Umberhant, Cornelia, Lessie Finnigan, Texas, Margie Rabb, Jefferson, Hilda Mewborne, Mt. Airy, Betty Loggins, Hollywood, and Linda York, Toccoa; 15 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 29, at 2 p.m., in the Baldwin Congregational Holiness Church with Pastor John Graham and the Rev. Sanford Kimbrell officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, October 27, from 6 to 8 p.m.
