Tommie Powell, of Stone Mountain, died Wednesday, October 15, 2008, following a period of declining health.
She was born in Comer in January of 1920, the daughter of Anderson Lloyd and Gertrude Cox Smith of Danielsville. She and grew up in Decatur and Atlanta. As an adult, she lived in Alma, New York, N.Y., Decatur and Stone Mountain. She was a member of Indian Creek Baptist Church. Mrs. Powell was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Avery Powell “Pete”; daughter, Trudie Bartkus; sisters, Ann Moon and Hazel Smith; and a brother, Lloyd Smith.
She was a bookkeeper at American Seating Company and elsewhere for a number of years. She attended Agnes Scott College for two years.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and Drew Litzenberger; sister, Floriede Smith; son-in-law, Patrick Bartkus; grandsons, Andrew and Peter Litzenberger and their wives, Laura and Andrea; granddaughter and spouse, Avery and Lewis Gregory; great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Reider and Alexander Litzenberger and Gracie Gregory; niece, Ann Moon and husband Tom; nephew, Andy Moon and wife, Emily; grandnephew, Jon Moon; grandnieces, Beth Moon, Claudia Folk and Annie Folk Pieper; and loving friends and caretakers, Mizpah Miller and Vanderlin Morris.
Friends and family are invited to gather on Sunday, October 26, at 3 p.m., at A.S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home in Decatur, with the memorial service immediately following at 4 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Indian Creek Baptist Church, 3901 Rockbridge Rd., Stone Mountain, Ga. 30083.
