Gene Richard Stinchcomb, 15G, USA, Ret, passed away Saturday, October 19, 2013.
1SG Stinchcomb was born July 29, 1927, the son of the late Giley and Essie Stinchcomb. He was preceded in death by two granddaughters, Laura Hawkins and Katie Landers; two grandsons, Joey Wallace and Michael Andrew Barrett; four sisters, Runell Pursley, Lona Mae Sanders, Martha Belle Garrett, and Helen Collins; and three brothers, Joe Allen, Robert, and June Bug Stinchcomb.
He served in the United States Marines and United States Army in China, Korea, Vietnam, and Germany, as well as all over the United States. During his 22 years of service, he served as a rifleman, postal inspector, aircraft maintainer, and first sergeant, receiving numerous awards and decorations. 1SG Stinchcomb retired in 1972. He moved back home, where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, singing and playing his guitar. He entertained at various locations in town. Music was a great love of his and he could play and sing for hours on end. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.
Survivors include Faye Stinchcomb; five daughters and three sons-in-law, Velma Hawkins, Debra and Ralph Landers, Margie Larson, Jo Ann and Jack West, and Betty and Roger Burlingame; two granddaughters, Shannon Chambers and Crystal Burlingame; eight grandsons, Stan Healan, Josh and Jonathan Larson, Donnie Wallace, RB, Garrett, Jason, and Caleb Burlingame; 11 great-grandchildren, Hope, Faith, Ava, Kloey, Lindsey, Maddie, Hannah, Kendra, Alyssa, Brylan, and Ava; four great-grandsons, Isaiah, Zackary, Brody, and Levi; three brothers, WL (Bill), Randolph, and Tommy Stinchcomb.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 21, at Memory Chapel of Smith Funeral Home with Pastor Richard Cole officiating. Burial was in Union Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the staff at Winder Health Care and Evercare Hospice for all the superior and loving care given to Gene during this illness.
