ELBERTON – Frances Wansley Gilbert, 96, widow of the late Tom H. Gilbert Sr., passed away Monday, August 19, 2013, at St. Mary’s Hospice House in Bogart.
Born on November 13, 1916, in Elberton, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Quinn and Fannie Maxwell Wansley. Mrs. Gilbert was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Wansley Findley.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Elberton where she was recognized for 50 years of service as a Sunday School Teacher for junior boys. She was also a member of the Elbert Memorial Hospital Auxiliary where she was a Pink Lady. She was a homemaker and a wonderful seamstress for many friends in Elberton. She won many blue ribbons for making canned foods and children’s clothes at the Elberton 12 County Fair. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and playing Swedish Rummy, and teaching Bridge to retirees in various retirement homes throughout the community. Above all, “Grandma” thoroughly enjoyed summer visits from her five grandchildren.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Rudy Lumpkin, Winder; sons, Tom H. Gilbert Jr., Conway, and Don Gilbert, Elberton; five grandchildren and their spouses, Ryan and Rhonda Lumpkin, Winder, Jarrod and Kim Lumpkin, Atlanta, Traci and Greg Stafford, Charlotte, N.C., Brooke and Bob Gately, Seattle, Wash., Drs. Kelle and Jason Siegmund, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and two great-grandchildren, Gavin and Tate Siegmund.
Funeral services to celebrate her life will be held Friday, August 23, at 11 a.m. in the memorial chapel of Berry Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Purvis officiating. Burial will follow in Elmhurst Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service.
