CHICKAMAUGA - Austin Henry "Pops" Whitlock's Book of Life opened January 15, 1931, and closed when God called him home on Wednesday, May 15, 2013.
Austin was born in Jackson County. He served in the United States Army with the Turner Tankers during the early 1950s, doing a tour of duty in Germany. Later, he was elected Vice President of American Legion Post 217. He received his degree in Business Administration from the University of Georgia in 1960. He worked as a department supervisor for Crystal Springs in Chickamauga from 1972 to 1995. He was on the Board of Directors at the Chickamauga Older American Center, where he served as chairman for 15 years.
Sundays encompassed all that Austin held dearest to him in this worldly life. With his family, he served and worshiped the Lord for 40 years at Fellowship Baptist Church in Chickamauga, where he was a deacon, sang bass in the choir, and spent some of his last days serving on a pastoral search committee. After church, he would gather around the table to fellowship with his children and grandchildren and enjoy Nana's famous cooking.
Austin's death has reunited him with his parents, Jacob Josiah and Lillie Covington Whitlock; three brothers, Ellis, James, and Harmon; two sisters, Fannie and Willie; and one granddaughter, Angel Kelsea Cunningham.
His legacy lives on through his wife of 55 years, Bertha; one brother, Ernest; two sons and their spouses, Greg and Cristal Whitlock and Jackie and Terrie Whitlock; one daughter and her spouse, Michael and Connie Cunningham; and three grandchildren, Marissa Whitlock, Macy Cunningham, and A.J. Whitlock.
Visitation will be Friday, May 31, from 4 to 9 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 12:30 at Wilson's Funeral Home in Chickamauga, GA. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, at Fellowship Baptist Church in Chickamauga, GA. Interment to follow at Lafayette Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Fellowship Baptist Church in memory of Austin Whitlock at 210 Thomas Ave., Chickamauga, Georgia 30707; funds will be divided between Fellowship Choir, Youth, and BSA Troop 224.
