GREENSBORO, N.C. – John "Buford" Holden, 89, departed from this life on Tuesday, May 15, 2013, at Maple Grove Rehab Center.
He was born August 29, 1923, in Georgia, the son of the late Andrew Jackson Holden and Cummi Woods Holden. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church for over 50 years, and was the recipient of the Purple Heart after being wounded during his service in the United States Army. Buford retired from Vanstory Oil Company after 30 years of employment and then worked as a courier for the Greensboro News and Record. He enjoyed gardening and fishing in his spare time. Mr. Holden was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Sara Ann Minish Holden; a granddaughter, April Thomas; and all of his siblings.
Survivors include a daughter, Janice H. Thomas and husband Harry, Greensboro, N.C.; son, John D. Holden and wife Geraldine, Massachusetts; three grandchildren, Jason Holden, Christie Bisbee, and Jennifer Sniger; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18, at Hanes-Lineberry Vanstory Chapel, with the Rev. Patrick Fuller officiating. Burial will follow at Westminster Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday, May 17, at Hanes-Lineberry Vanstory Chapel.
