LAVONIA - Jack Ervin McElhannon, 87, passed away Sunday, May 5, 2013, at his home.
Born February 8, 1926 in Bethlehem, he was a son of the late Leroy and Flora Epps McElhannon. He was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church, and was retired from Johns Manville. He was a former police chief of Winder and also a former deputy. Mr. McElhannon was preceded in death by a brother, James "Bub" McElhannon; and a granddaughter, Carrie Bender.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Marlow McElhannon; daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Richard Bender and Melanie and Terry Ferguson; grandchildren, Brad and Denise Bender, Lacey Ferguson and Shea Ferguson; great-granddaughter, Taylor Bender; his dog, Lucky; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, from the chapel of Whitlock Mortuary with the Revs. Jason DeFoor and Jewell Gaines officiating. Burial will follow at Roselane Cemetery. The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers, Swayne London, Carter Chastain, Tommy White, Tim Harris, Al Pinson, and Verner Roach. C.B. Alewine will serve as an honorary pallbearer. The family will receive friends at the mortuary from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 7.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Poplar Springs Baptist Church.
The family will be at the home of Susan and Richard Bender.
