COMMERCE - Elaine Yankee Harber, 76, died Friday, February 15, 2013, at her residence.
She was born March 5, 1936, in Rome, the daughter of the late Richard Murrell Yankee, Sr. and Helen Bryan Yankee. Mrs. Harber was preceded in death by her husband, James J. "Sonny" Harber, Jr.
She was a graduate of Rome High School, the University of Georgia, and a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Athens. A devoted mother and grandmother, and she also continued to manage Commerce Drug Company after Sonny's death in July 2000, until she sold the store.
Survivors include a son, Dr. James J. Harber, III (Jeanne), Simpsonville, S.C.; daughter, Helen Harber Singer (Christopher), Atlanta; brother, Richard Murrell Yankee, Jr.(Susan), Signal Mountain, Tenn.; and three grandchildren, Cecelia Harber, Alex and Ben Singer.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, February 20, at 11 a.m. from the Commerce Presbyterian Church with Tom Lewis officiating and with a private family burial held earlier. The family will receive friends Tuesday, February 19, from 5 to 7 p.m. from Mrs. Harber's house, 401 Delia Dr., Commerce, GA 30529.
In lieu of flowers or food for the family, donations may be made in Elaine's honor to the Jackson County Food Bank or the Jackson County Habitat for Humanity.
Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, is in charge of arrangements.
