HULL - Marshall James Carey, 79, died Sunday, January 27, 2013.
A native of Madison County, he was the son of the late Harold and Julia Hill Carey. He was preceded in death by a son, Stan Carey; and brothers, Artis and Kenneth Carey. He served his county in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. Marshall was the founder of Shade Tree Racing, which he was very passionate about, and he loved to fish. He was of the Baptist denomination.
Survivors include his wife, Leola Bray Carey; children, Gail (Tim) Richey, Mark (Martha) Carey, and Brant Carey, all of Hull; a brother: Jack Carey, Gainesville; sisters, Miron Bentley, Wilkesboro, N.C., and Gatha Dixon, Athens; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 30, at Union Baptist Church at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Billy Owensby officiating. Pallbearers will be Chris Bennett, Brian Hayes, Keith Hardy, Kole Hardy, Royce Bray, Kevin Scott, Craig Self and Jimmy Crowe. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 29, at the funeral home.
