ALTO – Nina Griffin Smith, 107, passed away on Wednesday, December 12, 2012. Before moving to Alto, she resided in Chicago and in Atlanta most of her life.
She was born in Fort Payne, DeKalb County, Ala., on January 7, 1905, the daughter of the late John Oscar and Christina Rains Griffin. She was preceded in death by her husband, A.T. Smith; four sisters; two brothers; and three great-grandsons. Mrs. Smith was the last of her immediate family. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Cornelia.
She rode a train from Crossville, Tenn. to Chicago to meet her future husband, A.T. Smith, and they were married for 77 years at the time of his death. Mrs. Smith was a retired teacher and homemaker. She taught school in a one-room school in Alabama and also taught in Atlanta. Mrs. Smith was a pianist in First Alliance Church in Atlanta and also played at First Baptist Church Sunday School in Cornelia.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Anita and Buster Cleveland, Alto; sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Evelyn Smith, Tucker, and Thurston and Diane Smith, West Columbia, Texas; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 18, at 2 p.m. at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, with the Rev. Gene Todd officiating. Interment will be in Yonah Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from noon until the funeral hour.
