LULA - Ernest Luther Powell, 90, passed away on Monday, November 19, 2012, at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center following an extended illness.
Born in Banks County on December 14, 1921, he was the son of the late Martin Luther and Lora Greenway Powell. He was a United States World War II veteran, having served his country proudly in Europe during the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Powell was a member of the local Grant Reeves V.F.W. Post # 7720, as well as the Woodmen of the World, Cornelia Lodge, the Civilian Conservation Corps., and was of the Holiness denomination. He was preceded in death by sisters, Minnie Powell Parson, Rosie Powell Parson, and Ruby Powell Davidson; brothers, Charlie Powell, Arthur Powell, James "Pete" Powell, Willie Powell, Thomas Powell, and Swayne Powell.
Survivors include his loving wife, Julia Wade Powell, Lula; a brother, John Powell, Elberton; sister-in-laws, Joyce W. Franklin, Alto, and Gertrude W. Grier, Lula; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services are scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday, November 21, from the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home with the Rev. Donnie Wilkes officiating. Interment will follow in the Yonah Congregation Church Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Grant Reeves V.F.W. Post # 7720, American Legion Post # 84, DA.V. Chapel #15, and the Georgia National Guard.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, November 20, from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. and from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.
