Mary McCollum Garrett, 85, formerly of Columbus, died Thursday, September 13, 2012.
Mary and her husband, the late Rev. James L. Garrett, devoted many years to mission work in Brazil. They also owned and operated “The Amazon Cove,” a Christian bookstore in Columbus. Mary received her master’s degree in education from Georgia State University and taught elementary school in the Columbus area. In addition to her husband, Mary was preceded in death by her parents, John B. and Florrie Coffin McCollum; and a sister, Belle Pennington.
Survivors include two sons, David Garrett, Louisville, Ky., and John Garrett, Sterling, Va.; two daughters, Mary Alice Woods (John), Eufala, Ala., and Beth Lucoveic, Altamonte Springs, Fla.; a sister, Sammy Johnson, Phoenix City, Ala.; four grandchildren, Mary Jo Kovacs, Donna Hooper, David Garrett, and Mary Lee Garrett; and two great-grandchildren, Christian and Isabelle Hooper.
A visitation will be held at Smith Funeral Home Tuesday, September 18, from 9 to 11 a.m., prior to the service. Graveside services will be at Barrow Memorial Gardens in Winder at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board in support of continued mission work in equatorial Brazil.
Smith Funeral Home, Winder, is in charge of arrangements.
