COLBERT - Lafayette Woodrow "Woody" Cone, 93, died Tuesday, May 1, 2012 of natural causes at his residence.
He was born on April 21, 1919, in Stilson, he was the son of the late Remer Hamilton and Ila Mae Mingledorf Cone. He retired from the United States Air Force in 1970 after serving 28 years in the military as a command pilot during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. His Form 5 shows that he flew over 450 hours behind enemy lines during combat. He earned his pilot's license at Ben Epps Field through the University of Georgia, School of Aviation. Mr. Cone graduated from the University of Georgia in 1949 with a LLB degree (Bachelor of Laws.) He was later awarded a JD (Juris Doctor) by University of Georgia. He practiced law in Commerce and Jefferson after his retirement from the Air Force.
Survivors include his children, Jon and Fran Cone, Lilburn, Marcus Cone and Kim
Schultz, Huntington Beach, Calif., Phillip Cone, Monroe, and Tommy and Elisa Coulter, Colbert; grandchildren, Erin Cone, Jared and Marisa Coulter, and Chad, Ben and Drew Leathers.
He will be buried beside his first wife and mother of his children, Olive Mary Gritten Cone.
A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Memorial Park, Athens, on Saturday, May 12, at 10 a.m.
