DANIELSVILLE - Randy Lane McElroy, 62, died Thursday, April 12, 2012.
Born in Athens and raised in Madison County, he was the son of Mary Gloria McElroy and the late Charles Asa McElroy. Mr. McElroy was preceded in death by his stepmother, Lottie Williams McElroy.
Randy graduated from Madison County High School. He then received a bachelor’s in Political Science from the University of Georgia and a master’s in Systems Management from the University of Southern California.
Randy specifically stated he was "very proud to have served his Country." He spent 20 years as an Air Force Officer, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was a Radar Navigator/Bombardier on the B-52. He served in Operation: Desert Storm and received multiple medals and ribbons, his highest honor being the Meritorious Service Medal.
After retirement, Randy continued to serve veterans, holding many offices within the local Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He supported many high school and college ROTC units, preparing the next generation of military officers.
Survivors include his loving wife of 41 years, Louise Faulkner McElroy; son, Travis McElroy; brother, Clay (Avis) McElroy; sisters, Inya (Butch) Russell, Vickie (John) Eubanks; stepbrother, David (Neta) Hix; and stepsister, Wanda (Larry) Horne.
Funeral services were held Sunday, April 15, at Moon's Grove Baptist Church, where Randy is a member, with the Rev. Tom Dial officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
