HELEN - Doris Ruth Cathey, 84, passed away Sunday, March 18, 2012 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
She was a native of Robertstown in White County. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Martha Allison Cornell; a sister Charlotte Turner; and brother Larry Cornell. She attended White County Schools, and graduated from Nacoochee High School in 1944.
She was a member and former choir member of Center Baptist Church. From 1962-1969 she was co-owner and operator of The Iceburg, one of Helen's first restaurants. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and homemaker, and was well known among friends and family for her cooking and baking.
Survivors include her husband and caregiver of 67 years, Ross Cathey; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard "Skeet" and Beth Cathey, Jefferson, Skip and Judy Cathey, Cleveland, Jeff and Zulene Cathey, Sautee Nacoochee; grandson and wife, Jeremy and Kelly Cathey, Cleveland; two great-grandchildren, Grayson and Paisley Cathey; step-granddaughter and husband, Libby and Will Tonogan, Sautee Nacoochee; two step-grandchildren, Dylan and Gracie Tonogan; and a step-grandson, J.D. Brewington, Tennessee.
Survivors include sisters and spouses, Florence Sims, Gainesville, Sue Nix, Cleveland, and Evelyn and Darald Binsz, Winterville; brothers and spouses, Dan and Sandra Cornell, Hartwell, and Glenn and Jena Cornell, Dacula; brother-in-law, Arthur Turner, Dunwoody; sister-in-law, Arlene Cornell, Hagerstown, Md.; special friend, Sandee Pulliam, Helen; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Tuesday, March 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Alexander Funeral Home, 2721 Highway 129 South, Cleveland and services will be held in the funeral home chapel, Wednesday, March 21, at 1 p.m. with the Revs. Michael Wilkes, Henry Loggins, Hoyt Winkler and Garry Hefner officiating. Interment will be at Gateway Memory Park Cemetery, Cleveland, with nephews Michael Sims, Hal Sims, Artie Turner, Steve Turner, Chad Cornell, Bill Cornell, Mark Binsz, Butch Nix, Rick Trivett and Dan Windam serving as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Center Baptist Church, Building Fund, 109 Elrod Rd., Helen, GA 30545.
Alexander Funeral Home of Cleveland is in charge of arrangements.
