Mary Duke Hunter, 91, of Jefferson, died Sunday, August 31, 2008.
She was born September 16, 1916, in Jackson County, the daughter of the late Marshall Nathaniel “Cap” Duke Sr. and Daisey Davis Duke. She was a graduate of Martin Institute in Jefferson, the Athens Business College, and was retired from the Carwood Manufacturing Company in Winder. She was a member of the Jackson County Senior Citizens Group and the First United Methodist Church in Jefferson, where she was a member of the church quilting club. Mrs. Hunter was preceded in death by her husband, J.S. Hunter; and a brother, Marshall N. “Buck” Duke Jr.
Survivors include children, Lynda Hunter and Robert “Gene” Hawkins, Gainesville, Gail Hunter and Edward Henderson, Flowery Branch, Douglas and Jan Hunter, Walhalla, S.C.; brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Juanita Duke, Hephzibah, Ted and Mayrelle Duke, Jefferson; sister-in-law, Margaret Duke Medzker, Charleston, S.C.; six grandchildren and spouses, Kathi Burt, LeAnne Henderson, Krista Hawkins and Jack Hillis, Kevin and Dana Hunter, Crystal Taylor, Ken and Vicki Henderson; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 2, at 11 a.m., in the First United Methodist Church of Jefferson. Burial will be in Jackson Memorial Park. Visitation will be held Monday, September 1, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Jefferson, 188 Martin St., Jefferson, Ga. 30549, or the Jackson County Senior Citizen’s Center, 151 General Jackson Dr., Jefferson, Ga. 30549.
