Hubert Murray, 89, of Clarkesville, died Wednesday, August 27, 2008, at his residence, following a brief illness.
Born in Banks County on July 7, 1919, he was the son of the late Judge and Amanda Crump Murray and was Baptist. Mr. Murray was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Ivie Murray; son-in-law, Kenneth Baumgardner; sisters, Minnie Cotton, Irene Pritchett, Montene Morgan, Florence Stowe, Ruth Hicks and Grace Parker; brothers, William, Dorsey, G.C., Bruce and Jr. Murray. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Army during World War II, and being recipient of several medals, including a Good Conduct medal, Bronze Star medal, and an American Defense Service medal. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #7720, enjoyed gardening, and was best known for riding his buggy in parades throughout the Northeast Georgia area.
Survivors include a daughter, Elaine Baumgardner, Clarkesville; sister, Gertrude Wade, Cornelia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday, August 29, at 11 a.m., in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home with the Rev. Jonathan Fitzpatrick officiating. Burial will be in the VFW Memorial Park with full military honors provided by the Habersham County Disabled American Veterans Chapter #15 and the American Legion Post #84. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, August 28, from 6 to 9 p.m. Flowers are accepted or donations may be made to Compassionate Hospice, 2565 Thompson Bridge Rd., Suite 112, Gainesville, Ga. 30501.
