COMER - Melvin Eugene Drake, 63, died following a period of declining health.
Mr. Drake was born in Royston on June 14, 1948, the son of the late George and Beatrice Hulsey Drake. Mr. Drake was a master mechanic and a school bus driver for the Madison County School System. He was a Madison County Commissioner in District 4, and a lifelong member of Friendship Baptist Church. He attended mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Athens, as well as helping his wife with the Civil Air Patrol cadets. Mr. Drake will always be remembered for being a great man who ideally represented kindness and humility.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Drake; children, Heather Spratlin, Erin Chandler, Rachel Julian, Chloe Chandler, Haley Hicks, Michael Kiser, and Christopher Bridges; a brother W.G. Drake;, grandchildren, Glenn Spratlin II, and Ella and Brayden Bridges; and loving pet, Rowdy Eugene.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, November 22, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 23, at 3 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church with the Revs. Joe Davis and Dayton Logan, Tim Riley and Otis Graham officiating. Burial will be in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery.
