PENDERGRASS - Shirley Fay Mangum, 67, died Sunday, November 13, 2011 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens, following a brief illness.
She was born November 29, 1943 the daughter of the late William and Edna Jane Brookshire Whitlow. She was a native of Hall County, a homemaker and a member of Fairview Baptist Church. She loved dirt track racing and won many women’s championships from 1970 to 1980. Mrs. Mangum was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Mangum; one of her sisters, Dora Lee Carney; and two of her grandchildren, Dusty Mangum and Mikey Conner.
Survivors include sons, Dinky Mangum and Gary Mangum, both of Pendergrass, and Larry Mangum of Maysville; daughter, Tammy Conner, Jefferson; sisters, Brendia Nix, Gainesville, and Bessie McCord, Cumming; brothers, J.W. Whitlow, Henry Whitlow, Clayton Whitlow, and Jerry Whitlow, all of Gainesville, Jacky Whitlow, Flowery Branch; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, November 16, at 11 a.m. at Academy Baptist Church with interment to follow in Center Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Eric Shelton will officiate. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 15, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
