HOSCHTON - Gertie Gumm, 99, died Tuesday, November 1, 2011.
A native of Banks County, she was the daughter of the late James David and Hulda Porter Ivie. Mrs. Gumm was the widow of Horace H. Gumm and Wiley B. Rachels. She was preceded in death by daughters Delores Rachels, Ottaline Rachels, Bonita Andrews and Annette Davis. She was also preceded by grandchildren David Stanton, Diane Arrington, Wiley Rachels and Ann Rich. Mrs. Gumm served as a welder at Savannah Shipbuilders and as a seamstress at Arrow Shirts. She was a current member of Hoschton First Baptist Church and was a former member of Statham First Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Winston and Lula Rachels, Covington; daughters and son-in-law, Mary Stanton, Jefferson, Girleene Barnes, Hogansville, and Jane and Don Bush, Hoschton; 23 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and 55 great-great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held Friday, November 4, at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Carter Funeral Home with the Revs. Gerald Purvis, Gordon Thornton and Robert Stamey officiating. Burial will be in Barrow Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, November 3 from 4 to 8 p.m.
