ROYSTON – Nettie Rachel Jordan Jenkins, 94, died Wednesday, October 19, 2011, at the Gables in Royston.
She was born on September 23, 1917, the daughter of the late Gordon and Mattie Siegler Jordan. Mrs. Jenkins was preceded in death by her husband, James V. Jenkins Jr. In 1936 she was awarded a crafts teaching certificate from Tallulah Falls High School and went on to teach crafts at her alma mater. During the summers in the late 1930’s, she kept a gift shop on Lake Rabun and did extensive weaving on a hand and foot powered loom. During the restoration of Williamsburg, many of her hand woven items were sold in gift shops there.
In 1942 Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins were married and made their home in the Sanford/Neese Community of Madison County near Hull for more than 60 years with greater than 50 of those years being spent on their farm where they were the proud parents of two children, Harriet and Jim, while she continued weaving lovely articles as well as keeping a local country store. She also worked for Davison’s Department Store and Austin’s Furniture Store.
During her retirement years, Mrs. Jenkins resumed her hobby of crafting and including quilting and needlepoint. In 2003 she chose The Gables in Royston to be their home for their remaining years. Mr. Jenkins preceded her in death on February 5, 2008.
Survivors include her daughter, Harriet Gray and her partner, John Norton, Royston; son, James V. Jenkins III and his wife, Linda, Long Island City, N.Y.; brother, Alton Jordan, Royston; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Crawford and Jane Jenkins, Stone Mountain; as well as several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, October 21, at Pruitt Funeral Home in Royston. The service will take place in the chapel of the funeral home Saturday, October 22, at 2 p.m. with the Revs. Billy Owensby and Ed Nelson officiating. Burial will be in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery.
