MARTIN - Alvin Winford Voyles, 86, went home to be with his Lord Wednesday, October 5, 2011, at North Ridge Nursing Home in Commerce.
Born January 6, 1925, in Franklin County, he was the son of the late Joel and Maude (Aderhold) Voyles. He was a beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He retired from the Department of Natural Resources, where he served as maintenance ranger at Tugaloo State Park. He was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church and the Men’s Sunday School Class. Mr. Voyles was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Nettie Pauline (Ramey) Voyles; daughter, Shirley Sue Voyles; brothers, Willie Voyles and Coleman Voyles; and sisters, Zelma Taylor, Lucy Harbin, Nina Carter, Addie Dean, Flora Saylors and Rachel Voyles.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Brenda Voyles, Hull, and Tommy and Maephene Voyles, Martin; sister, Ammer Crook; grandchildren, Shauna and Ed Smith, Melissa and Ed Perry, Jason Voyles and Todd and Staci Voyles; and eight great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, October 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. At other hours the family will be at their respective homes.
Funeral services will be held Friday, October 7, at 11 a.m., at Poplar Springs Baptist Church with the Revs. Jason DeFoor and Hubert Carter officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church to lie in state beginning at 10:30 a.m.
Strickland Funeral Home, Lavonia Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
