Robert Alexander Hill took his final flight Wednesday, September 21, 2011.
He was born on August 10, 1916, in Barrow County, the son of the late Robert Alexander and Lola Maddox Hill. Mr. Hill was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Hill Robinson; wife and longtime companion, Reba Garner Hill; and a son, Douglas Garner Hill.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Robert G. “Bob” and Gwen Gustafson Hill; grandchildren, Alex Hill (Amanda), Audrey Hill DiGiovanni (Joe); and great-grandchildren, Robert Alexander Hill, Sarah Anne Hill and Trent Garner DiGiovanni.
Robert’s lifelong love of aviation started when aviation was in its infancy. He taught himself how to fly when he was 18, and left Georgia Tech to become a Naval Aviator when the United States entered World War II. He served four years as a flight instructor as well as a ferry pilot, flying new Navy fighters from New York to San Diego. After the war was over, he and Reba returned to Winder to raise their two boys. He established Hill’s Supply Company (which is now Hill’s Ace Hardware & Lumber Center) and Gwinnett Concrete Products Company. He also owned and operated Duluth Ready Mix Concrete. Robert served in many positions in the Winder First United Methodist Church, and was instrumental in building the current campus. He also served on the boards of directors of the Peoples Bank, The Barrow County Hospital Authority, and other civic and business organizations.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 23, at 11 a.m. at the Winder First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Larry Rary and Terry Tippens officiating. The body will lie in state from 10:30 to 11 a.m. prior to the service.
Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday, September 22, from 5 to 7 at the funeral home.
The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Winder First United Methodist Church, 280 N. Broad St., Winder, GA 30680.
Smith Funeral Home, Winder, is in charge of arrangements.
