WINDER - Lt. Col. John R. King, (retired), 93, died Wednesday, September 7, 2011.
A native of Columbus, he was a son of the late Wilbur and Lillie Mae Davis King. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frankie Sanders King, in 1971.
Lt. Col. King served in the United States Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. During World War II, he was a P. O. W. in France and was part of the occupation force in Japan. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Lt. Col. King was a member of the Barrow County Chamber of Commerce, board member of Fort Yargo State Park, and member of The V. F. W. and American Legion.
Survivors include a daughter, Lily Page; grandchildren, Sandy Page and Jonathan Page; siblings, Margaret Jenkins, Ruby Mixon, Betty Leachman, Lillian McLeod and Fred King.
Funeral services and interment were held in Columbus on Saturday, September 10. A memorial service was held Sunday, September 11, from the chapel of Carter Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeremy Davis officiating.
