HOMER – David Alvin Hughes Sr., 69, died Sunday, August 14, 2011, at the Northridge Medical Center in Commerce.
Born in Suches, he was the son of the late Luther and Flossie Griffin Hughes. Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by a brother, Lavoid Hughes.
He was founder and director of the “A Better Place Children’s Home."
Survivors include his wife, Ann H. Hughes, Homer; children, David Alvin Hughes, Jr., White County, Scot Hughes, Douglasville, Tina VanAlstine and Danny Hughes, both of Murrayville, Dina Colley, Randy Hughes and Nikki Hughes, all of Homer, Stephanie Hughes, Dawsonville; siblings, M.T. Hughes, Suches, Marvin Hughes and Daniel Hughes, both of Clermont, Alvin Lunsford, White County, Jackie Hughes, Danielsville, and Diane Graves, Florida; 17 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday, August 19, at 11 a.m., from the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home with the Revs. Chuck Morley and Jackie Kendrix officiating. Burial will be in the Bethany Christian Church Cemetery in Homer. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, August 18, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and at other times at the residence.
Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, is in charge of arrangements.
