COMER – Powell Douglas Conwell Sr., 84, died Sunday, June 26, 2011, at the St. Mary‘s Hospice House in Bogart.
Born in Madison County on January 27, 1927, he was the son of the late Hawkins H. and Chester Scarborough Conwell. He was owner and operator of Conwell’s Grocery for 30 years and was also owner of Conwell’s Garage Service. He was a member of the David’s Home Pentecostal Holiness Church and was a United States Army Veteran having served in the tank division during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Conwell was preceded in death by sisters, Rosa Rigney, Jewell Conwell and Dorothy Conwell; and brothers, Coy Conwell and Jim Conwell.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Mary Whitmire Conwell, Comer; daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Bobby Fountain, Royston, and Sandra and Scott Strickland, Danielsville; sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Jenny Conwell, Danielsville, William and Beverly Conwell, Comer, and Stephen Conwell, Athens; grandchildren, Adam Conwell, Erica Conwell, Sabrina Strickland and Spencer Strickland; brother and sister-in-law, Hubbard and Edna Conwell, Comer; and sister and brother-in-law, Billie and Charlie Coile, Comer.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 29, at 11 a.m., from the David’s Home Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Revs. Ray Jenkins and Doug Conwell officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Wesley Conwell, Charles Smith, Todd Smith, Wade Scarboro, Jerry Scarboro and Danny Dobbs. The body is at the Pruitt Funeral Home in Royston where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 28. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Wednesday morning. The family is at home.
