Charlie Ellington Smith, 83, of Baldwin, died Sunday, May 18, 2008, at a private care facility, following an extended illness.
He was born in Pickens County, S.C., on August 15, 1924, the son of the late George Earl and Mary Elizabeth Anderson Smith. He was a member of the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Banks County. He served his community faithfully in law enforcement, having retired as Chief of Police with the Demorest Police Department and formerly served in the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and the Cornelia Police Department. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Tench Smith; brothers, George Earl Smith Jr., Raymond Smith, Walter Smith; and sisters, Sadie and Annie Nations.
Survivors include daughters, Sandra and Billy Joe Barrett, Hollingsworth, Phyllis Smith and special friend, Steve Sosby, Toccoa, Wanda and Phil Perry, Cornelia, Denise and Steve Holland, Hollingsworth; sister, Rachel Davis, Gastonia, N.C.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 20, at Whitfield Funeral Home with the Rev. Ralph Smith and Larry Whitfield officiating. Burial was in Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery, Banks County.
Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, was in charge of arrangements.
