HOMER – Egbert Washington Estes, 96, died Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at his residence.
Born in Atlanta, he was the son of Egbert Washington Estes Sr. and Lena Bell Estes. Mr. Estes was a member of the Decatur First United Methodist Church, Benevolent Order of Elks, the American Legion and was a United States Army veteran, serving his country in WWII. He was retired from Peerless Construction Company and was an avid golfer until the age of 91. Mr. Estes was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Eugenia Smith Estes; son-in-law, Mitch Whitfield; brother, David Estes; and sister, Evelyn Bullard.
Survivors include his daughter, Ellen Whitfield, Homer; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Keith Campbell, Homer; grandchildren, Wes and Patty Whitfield, Ben Whitfield, Kate and Josh Beasley, Kyle Campbell, Kerri and Scott Henley; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 17, at the chapel of A.S. Turner & Sons with Bishop Bevel Jones and the Rev. Jim McLendon officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Decatur First United Methodist Church.
