CORNELIA - John Talmon Pendergrass 91, died Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at The Oaks at Scenic View following an extended illness.
Born in Banks County on August 06, 1919, he was the son of the late William and Sarah Harber Pendergrass. He was a United States Navy Veteran having served in the Asiatic-Pacific Area in World War II, where he received the Bronze Star, seven Battle Stars and Good Conduct American Defense Medals for his service. He was retired from the United States Air Force, Civil Service and Logistics. He was known in the community for his dedication to his wife and family, support of the Cornelia United Methodist Church, as well as his frequent visits to the shut-ins. Mr. Pendergrass was preceded in death by his wife, Lena Worley Pendergrass; and sister, Hazel P. Sparks.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, John E. and Jean Pendergrass, DeBary, Fla.; three grandchildren, Brian Pendergrass, Mark Pendergrass and Amy Gibson; four great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, at the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart with Mr. Michael Carroll officiating. Burial will follow in Yonah Memorial Gardens with full military honors provided by the Habersham County American Legion Post #84, Grant Reeves VFW Post #7720 and the Rabun County DAV Chapter #15. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 13, and from 9:30 a.m. until the service hour on Saturday.
