LAVONIA – Charlie Compton West, 87, died Saturday, April 2, 2011, at his residence.
Born on July 24, 1923, in Madison County, he was the son of the late Roscoe and Pearl (Looney) West. He retired from Whitworth Poultry Farm and was of the Baptist denomination. He was the last survivor of seven children. Mr. West was preceded in death by a son, James Edward West; daughter, Peggy Ann West; and his family pet, Teddy Bear.
Survivors include his wife, Beatrice (Sorrow) West; daughter and son-in-law, Charlene and Gary Neese; sons and daughters-in-law, William and Patricia West and Tommy and Vickie West; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 5, at 2 p.m., from the Lavonia Chapel of Strickland Funeral Home with Joe Renfro and the Rev. Mike Smith officiating. Burial will be in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery in Danielsville, Madison County. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Darren, Dwayne, Joe, Randall, Waylon, Josh, and family friend James Stroud. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday, April 4, from 7 to 9 p.m. At other hours the family will be at home.
