HOMER - Wansa Whitfield Purcell, 78, died on Monday, February 28, 2011.
Born in Banks County on December 20, 1932, she was the daughter of the late James Hubert and Ruby Gertrude Caudell Whitfield. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Purcell; her sister, Sue Moore; and one grandchild, Christopher Purcell. Mrs. Purcell was formerly employed with Chicopee Manufacturing and Grady Elementary School, as a food service technician. She was also a poultry and cattle farmer and a homemaker. Mrs. Purcell was a member of Charity Baptist Church, a Sunday School Teacher, treasurer of her church for a number of years, and a big worker in Bible School. She was a great Christian and peacemaker.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and Dale Ayers and Karen Ann and Chris Bolton, all of Homer; sons and daughters-in-law, Dale and Diane Purcell and Anthony “Tony” and Tammy Purcell, all of Homer; sisters, Carolyn Purcell, Mt. Airy, Genell Williams and Linda Poole, both of Homer; brothers, James Whitfield, Mt. Airy, Gary Whitfield, Homer, and Lamar Whitfield, Clarkesville; grandchildren, Kevin Purcell, Sandie Purcell Parker, Brent and Josh Purcell, Amanda Ayers Massey, Lori Ayers and Cory, Chase and Cara Bolton; and great-grandchildren, Landon Purcell, Andrew and Chandler Parker, Elijah and David Purcell and Kaden Purcell.
Funeral services are scheduled for 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2, at Charity Baptist Church in Homer, with the Revs. Scott Smith and Billy Burrell and with Kevin Purcell and Brent Purcell officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, Georgia.
The body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2, to lie in state until the funeral hour.
