Roger P. Glass, Sr., 71, passed away from this life into the next January 23, 2011. He was born in Barrow County, the son of the late Ella Reese Griffeth Glass and W.J. Glass. He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Mallory Moody.
He grew up in Greensboro where he and his wife, Sandra Caldwell Glass, graduated from Greensboro High School in 1957. He was recognized as a stand out athlete still holding the record for the most touchdowns scored in one game and awarded a football scholarship to Clemson University in South Carolina where he attended college.
As a young man, Roger was employed by several timber companies and was transferred to Bishop, Ga. in 1966 where he partnered with Murrow Brothers and started his own timber business, Oconee Timber, Inc. He became a real estate developer and was a partner in LGM Realty. His most recent venture was the vision and development of Mulberry Grove Assisted Living in Statham, Ga. He was a well respected and admired businessman known for his honesty and as being a man of his word.
Roger was an avid golfer, serving as a past president of the Monroe Golf and Country Club. While living in Bishop he was elected Mayor of the town. In 2002, he and Sandra returned to their roots in Greensboro, Ga. making their home at the Lake Oconee╒s Harbor Club Community. He was a member of the Bishop United Methodist Church.
Although he had many accomplishments in his lifetime, his abundant family and taking care of them, was his true pride, joy and pleasure, loved ones stated.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Sandra; two sons, Roger Phillip ╥Phil╙ (Michelle) Glass Jr. and W. Perry (Lynn) Glass; three daughters, Pam (Dave) Ellis, Paula (Leon) Hoover, and Patti (Mike) Moody; one brother, Ray (Dot) Glass; 16 grandchildren, Jessica and Jackson Ellis, Roger ╥Phillip╙ Glass III, Abigail, Ella, Amelia Glass, Luke, Natalie (Coss), Nicole, Rachel and Levi Hoover, Cami Grace and Cassi Lane Glass, Jason, Matthew and Anna Moody; and one great-grandson, Paxton Stephens.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday January 26, at 11 a.m. at Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, West Chapel, with the Rev. Joe Gunby and Douglas Bower officiating. Burial will be at Oconee Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 25, at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Phillip Glass, Luke Hoover, Jackson Ellis, Matthew Moody, and good friends Jerome Martin and Jimmy Britt.
