SEBRING, FLA. – Thomas J. “Tommy” Benton, 62, died Friday, December 17, 2010, at Florida Hospital following an extended illness.
Born in Clarke County on November 18, 1948, he was the son of the late Horace (Speed) and Clara Eberhart Benton. He was originally from Colbert and moved to Maryland in 1986 to work in the cable construction industry. He followed his career with another move to West Virginia in 1992, and finally to Virginia in 1996. Becoming disabled to work, he retired and relocated in Florida in 2007. Mr. Benton was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jodie Torres.
Survivors include his loving mate, Pam Vaughn Benton; daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa (Steve) Bolen and Kim Benton, Danielsville, Ginger (Chris) Pitts, Lavonia; and stepdaughter, Vickie (Matt) Izzo, Newport News, Va.; grandchildren, Jennifer Drake, Taryn Benton and Jeremy Tolbert, Trey and Skyler Pitts, Nicholas Izzo and twins, Roman and Gabe Izzo; sisters and brother-in-law, Glenda Adams and Junne and Charles Temple, all of Danielsville; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Bentley.
The memorial services scheduled for Sunday, December 26, was postponed due to inclement weather. The service has been rescheduled for Sunday, January 2, 2011, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Vanna. The original time of 3 p.m. was not changed.
