BALDWIN – Thomas “Tommie” B. Irvin, Sr., 84, died Sunday, December 5, 2010.
Born in Habersham County on August 2, 1926, he was the son of the late Lee V. and Stella Thomason Irvin. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Mr. Irvin was preceded in death by brothers, Jack Irvin Sr. and Lee Irvin Jr.; and a daughter-in-law, Ruthelene Allen Irvin.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cornelia, was a graduate of Cornelia High School, and was the 16th member of NASCAR and was inducted into the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame in 2009. He was a United States World War II veteran and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service. He was the owner of the Irvin’s Carhartt Store and was a passionate coon hunter most of his lifetime. Mr. Irvin enjoyed being with his friends.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Andrews Irvin, Baldwin; a daughter, Yvonne Irvin, Baldwin; sons and daughter-in-law, Bruce Irvin, Demorest, Bobby Irvin, Baldwin, and Danny and Carol Irvin, Homer; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 7, at 2 p.m., at the Whitfield Funeral Home with Bill Moody and the Rev. Scott Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Lamar Christian Church Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Rabun County DAV Chapter #15, Habersham County American Legion Post #84, and the Grant Reeves VFW Post #7720.

Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, is in charge of arrangements.
