JEFFERSON – Sylvester Shields, 72, died.
Born on January 14, 1938, in Jackson County, he was the son of the late Theo and Lizzie Bronner-Shields. He lived in Jefferson all his life and was employed by Jackson County School System, where he worked in the Braselton Elementary School for over 20 years before his health failed him. Mr. Shields was preceded in death by brothers, Lester Shields and Summie Shields; a sister, Catherleen Lester; and a great-granddaughter, Matilda Long.
He loved his outdoor activities. He loved sitting on his front porch daily. Being outdoors was his joy. He put his pride and joy into taking his grandchildren to school every day throughout their childhood days.
Survivors include children, Billy Shields, Jefferson, Bernice (Jimmy) Sewell, Nichlson; sisters, Mary Shields, Sara Reed, Annie Williams, all of Jefferson; brother, Hugh L. Shields, Jefferson; grandchildren, Jimmy Sewell Jr., Frank Sewell, Deon Sewell, Bernica Sewell and CaQuea (Torey) Evans; three great-grandchildren; godson, Fredick Usher; several nieces and nephews; a host of family and friends; and special friends, Olin Gillespie and Robert Pittman.
