WINDER - Dr. Don Hight, died Tuesday, October 26, 2010. He was 75 years old.
Dr. Hight was born in Athens and grew up in Hancock County, Georgia, the son of the late Robert A. and Pauline Roberts Hight. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Winder, where he taught Sunday school, served as a deacon and was chairman of the church construction committee.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gwen Swan Hight; two children, Bryan Hight (wife Ellen), of Athens, and Laura Hight Ryckeley (husband John), of Fayeteville; three grandchildren, Ashley, Annelise and Katie Ryckeley; sister Dorothy Cummings, Columbus; and brother, Robert A. Hight Jr., Spartanburg, S.C.
Dr. Hight served eight years in the Georgia National Guard. He received his undergraduate and doctorate degrees from the University of Georgia and began his career in public education in Thomson, Georgia in 1957, where he was principal of Thomson Junior High School. Later he was principal of Gaines Elementary in Athens, Assistant Principal of Athens High School and Principal of Monroe Area High School and Waycross High School.
In 1969 he became principal of Athens High School and later Clarke Central High School. In 1975 he was named Assistant School Superintendent and later Superintendent of the Clarke County School District.
Dr. Hight served as the Superintendent of the Barrow County School District in Winder from 1981 to 1989 and was named Barrow County Citizen of the Year in 1988.
From 1989 to 1995 he was Assistant State School Superintendent for the Georgia Department of Education in Atlanta. In 1995 he started Hight & Associates, a private consulting business in Winder, and retired in 2009.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 28, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Winder, with the Rev. John Talley officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Winder. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday, October 27, from 6 to 9 p.m.
