ATHENS – Mimi Mitchell Tufts died Saturday, October 16, 2010, at her residence in Athens.
Born in St. Louis, Mo. in 1925, she was the daughter of John E. and Miriam Mitchell. She was raised in Dallas, Texas and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. She was married to the late Rutledge Tufts of Atlanta, where they raised their family. Upon retirement, they settled in Madison, where they lived for over 20 years. Mimi spent her life as a homemaker and community volunteer. She was among the first class of women elders at the First Presbyterian Church in Atlanta and served as president of the Peachtree Garden Club during the 1970s.
Survivors include a sister, Jane Hollingsworth, Dallas, Texas; son, Mitchell Tufts, Reno, Nev.; daughter, Melissa Tufts, Comer; and grandchildren, Joseph Tufts, John Tufts, Katherine Cole Tufts, Wilcox Tufts and Jackson Tufts.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, October 23, at 10 a.m., from the First Presbyterian Church in Athens, with a reception following the service.
