ATHENS – John W. Brooks, 81, died Thursday, September 9, 2010.
A native of Jackson County, he was the son of the late Walter and Lucy Ayers Brooks. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict and retired from the United States Air Force after serving three tours in Southeast Asia. He was also retired as a foreman of the welding shop at the University of Georgia. Mr. Brooks was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Frances Lord.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Mary Whitlock Brooks; a son, Steve D. Brooks and his wife, Sue Ann Brooks, Jonesboro; daughter, Linda K. Fields and husband, Mike Fields, Athens; brother, Scott Brooks, Talmo; grandchildren, Lonnie Fields, Travis Fields, Brandy Brooks and Penny Wood; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, September 12, from the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenny Rosser officiating. Burial was at Evergreen Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Lonnie Fields, Travis Fields, Tim Rainwater, Jimmy Whitlock, Max Whitlock and Dan Gray.
Bernstein Funeral Home, Athens, was in charge of arrangements.
