JEFFERSON – Sidney Lanier Pope, Sr., 78, died Friday, August 6, 2010, at Hill Haven Nursing Home following an extended illness.
Born on July 31, 1932, he was the son of the late J.O. Pope Sr. and Lorraine Johnson Pope of Covington. He graduated from Fulton County High School in Atlanta and was retired from Atlanta Dental. He was a military policeman on a destroyer in the United States Navy, was a Mason with the Lakewood Lodge No. 443 in Atlanta, and was a member of the Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Mr. Pope was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Howard Pope; a son, Walter DeLeon Pope; grandson, Walter Duane Pope; and brothers, Joe Pope and Wallace Pope.
Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Pope, Jefferson; sons and daughters-in-law, Sidney Lanier (Lanny) Pope Jr. and Denise Pope, Commerce, Wallace Kevin Pope and Karen Pope, Jefferson, Steven Lee Pope Sr. and Meriam Pope, Covington; daughter-in-law, Cindy Pope, Jefferson; grandchildren, Jennifer Pope, Shannon Pope, Jody Pope, Josh Pope, Leslie Pope, Kimberly Pope, Kristopher Pope, Steven Pope, Michael Pope; five great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Iris Pope, Covington; four nephews; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.
Memorial services will be held Monday, August 9, at 4 p.m., from the Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Jefferson with the Rev. Tilly Welborn officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 1368 Ebenezer Church Rd., Jefferson, GA 30549.
