WINDER - Rev. Henry Newton Evans, 84, died Thursday, July 15, 2010.
A native of Rome, he was the son of the late Pete and Ella McGuire Evans. He was preceded in death by a brother, James M. Evans. A resident of Barrow County since 1976, Rev. Evans was ordained as a Baptist Minister in 1957. He served as pastor of Carl First Baptist Church for 13 years and Garden Heights Baptist Church for five years.
Rev. Evans was a veteran of the United States Navy and served during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Shannon Lodge #100, F. & A. M. and was a member of Scottish Rite in Atlanta and was a 33rd Mason. Rev. Evans was employed at Ingles Grocery Store since 1989.
Survivors include his wife, June Putnam Evans, Winder; son and daughter-in-law, James E. and Patricia Evans, Voluntown, Conn.; daughter, Shelia Smith, Winder; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 17, from the chapel of Carter Funeral Home with the Rev. Doyle Sims and Mr. Bill Banks officiating. Burial was in East View Cemetery, Rome, with Masonic and Military Rites. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Carl, 1588 Carl-Bethlehem Road, Auburn, Georgia 30011.
