WINDER - Virgil L. Gordon, 91, died Friday, July 16, 2010.
A Barrow County native, he was the son of the late Judson and Geroline Griffeth Gordon. He was a retired Air Force Sergeant Major and also a P.O.W. of World War II. He was in the 800 Mile March when he was liberated. Mr. Gordon was awarded every Medal the Air Force gave at the time of his retirement including the Purple Heart, The Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge and a Silver Star. He was a member of the Winder Moose Lodge, The Winder American Legion, a Life Member of the V.F. W. of Winder and a member of AMVETS, which was named in his and his brother’s honor. Mr. Gordon was of the Baptist denomination. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty G. Gordon; a son, Clark E. Gordon; daughter, Jeroline Gordon; and stepson, John Hamilton.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah Gordon, Winder; children, Barbara Gordon, Anderson, S.C., Charles Gordon, Watkinsville, Linda Pruden, Houston, Texas, James Gordon, Auburn, Jack Gordon, Cumming, Cherie Summer, Aiken, S.C, William Gordon, Winder, and Hugh Gordon, Statesboro; stepdaughter, Judy Nijack, Winder; 21 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held Monday, July 19, at Barrow Memorial Gardens with the Revs. Bobby Allen and Donnie Pennington officiating with full Military Honors.
Carter Funeral Home, Winder, was in charge of arrangements.
