COMER - Ernest “Ernie” William Norman Sr., 84, was born in Hackensack, N.J. on January 5, 1926. He was a manager for F.W. Woolworth’s stores in New York and New Jersey. He also owned a variety store in New Jersey. Upon moving south he became a store manager for W.T. Grant’s in Lantana, Florida and Atlanta, Georgia. A career change led him to own and operate Norman’s One Hour Martinizing in Atlanta and Norman’s One Hour Personalizing in Stone Mountain. Upon retiring he moved to his farm in Madison County, where he passed away on Tuesday, June 15, 2010.
Ernest Norman served in the United States Navy during World War II on a destroyer, USS Ross. For many years in New Jersey, he was the President and member of the Lions Club. Ernie Norman was an avid Deep Sea Fisherman and Golfer. He enjoyed participating and watching many sports. One of his favorite words of wisdom was “Swing easy and hit hard!” Ernie enjoyed gardening and spent a lot of time landscaping his various properties throughout life. Most of all he loved birds - watching, feeding, raising and showing them. He was a member of the Athens First United Methodist where his memorial service was held on Saturday, June 19.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 31 years, Lynn Kyle Norman; children, Ernie Jr. and Mary Norman, both of Stuart, Fla., Cheryl Norman, Lynn and Garth Tagge, and Melanie Norman, all of Atlanta, Bill and Cathy Norman, Alpharetta, and Valerie and Jason Fortson, Comer; grandchildren, Kent Tagge, Atlanta, Ashley Norman, Alpharetta, and Abby Kyle Fortson, Comer.
